He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. John 14:21
From Cocker Spaniels and Chihuahuas to Irish Wolf Hounds, the obedience school was filled with the woofs and yaps of every breed of dog imaginable. Some owners were pleased, others beside themselves in frustration. One dog, a Jack Russell named Flap-Jack was particularly obedient to his owner Denise. "Sit, stay, rollover," she commanded. He executed each command with ease and looked to her for approval. Over the course of the class, Flap-Jack had come to love and respect her. Denise was pleased with his obedience.
In a sense, we as Christians are like Flap-Jack because we should obey our master's commands. In our text, we read that those that love the Lord obey His commands and the Lord loves those who are obedient. Our obedience will draw us closer to our heavenly Father and result in heavenly rewards. It is more than a dog simply obeying his master, for we do it out of love and appreciation for what He has done for us.
Do you obey His commands? It is easy to think "well, of course I do" but think of some common commandments: Thou shalt not covet; thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself; honor thy father and mother. Perhaps it does not seem so easy now. Why not take a moment to examine areas in which you could be more obedient? Even the best of us sometimes need to visit obedience school.
