Four-year-old Emma closed her eyes as her mother tucked her in. "Do want your light left on or turned off?" asked mother. "Off," replied Emma.
As mother walked out of the room, she turned off the night-light only to hear a piercing wail. "Mommy, turn it on." Mother turned the night-light back on. "Is that better?"
"No, too bright," said Emma. "Can't I just have both light and dark?"
"Honey, there is no such thing as light with darkness. It's either one or the other. You cannot combine them. So which do you want?"
"Light, please," said Emma as she hugged her teddy bear.
Like Emma, many people do not realize that they cannot combine "light and darkness." The light and darkness we as Christians refer to is a spiritual light and darkness-Christ is the light and Satan is the darkness. They are as opposite as night and day. In our text it is made perfectly clear that there is a decision to be made because we cannot serve two masters.
